Are you a young person between the ages of 12 and 19? Love the ocean, the beach and have some extra energy to burn? Then come on out and give outrigger canoe paddling a try. Its fun, challenging and will give you a great work out too!
Hokuloa's summer Keiki (kids) program focuses on the basic skills of outrigger canoe paddling including boat-handling, steering and rigging plus teamwork and having fun! For the 2015 Season, our Keiki's will race the Kahanamoku Klassic in Marina del Rey on May 30;Ventura Outrigger Challenge on June 6; Iron Outrigger Championships in San Diego on June 20; Kahakai 9 man sprint relay on July 11;Noah Kalama Outrigger Classic in Long Beach on July 18; and State Sprint Championship in Santa Barbara on July 25.
Who: Boys and Girls 12 -19 years of age. Participants must be able to swim 100 yards comfortably. Bring sunblock, water, clothes that can get wet (hat, board shorts, rash guard/running shirt), water shoes are option in the canoe.
NOTE: Children under the age of 13 MUST wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD). You are responsible for providing this important safety equipment. If you have questions about a proper PFD for your child, the local Harbor Patrol can provide advice.
When: Monday & Wednesday evening from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm May 11th through July 26th, 2015.
Where: Harbor Cove Beach in Ventura Harbor across from the Channel Islands National Park Visitors Center at the end of Spinnaker Drive.
Cost: $175 per paddler. Includes use of club equipment, membership dues, race fees and a race jersey.
NOTE: Race fees include one event per race day. Fees to race in multiple events on a given race day are the responsibility of the paddler.
